A review of this — 2 years ago

I enjoy Kevin Smith’s work. Dogma was my introduction and I quickly went through his catalog. I was able to watch Jersey Girl on TNT.

It is a cute film. George Carlin was superb. The actress playing Gertie was very talented and Ben Affleck was believable.

I am assuming that most people were looking for Chasing Amy or a Silent Bob film. I think Kevin did go “hollywood” but he did an excellent job of following the formula. It almost seemed like a love poem he was writing to his child. You could see the transformation of the main character which (I assume) followed Kevin’s life.

It made me laugh out loud several times and it was heart warming, if not formulaic.

I do recommend it and I would watch it again.

The movie was okay. Just okay…
Loved George Carlin as Pop. I thought the daughter, Gertie was cute as a button too.

Kevin Smith does formula — 3 years ago

This is as close as Smith’s ever gotten to doing a “bad” movie. It’s not awful but it’s kinda Hollywood cookie cutter “gruff workaholic parent discovers what’s really important in life” and as such it’s a step down for someone as original (usually) as Smith has been. The fact that the soundtrack includes 2 songs from Bruce Springsteen should be a clue. Here’s hoping this is a one-time misstep from Smith.
