Jack Daniel's Old No. 7: A Few Quick Thoughts — 1 year ago
I’d never had Jack Daniels before this week, so I tried it a few different ways in order to have some variations helping my judgement.
Overall, it’s is a very mellow tasting whiskey, with a nice smoky flavour and a very mild aftertaste. I think it’s the best on its own, poured over a little ice. As an ingredient for a whiskey sour it is decidedly weak; it doesn’t have enough body to really give the drink much flavour. Mixed with orange juice…well, let’s just say it’s worth trying once.
And Jack & Coke deserves a very special mention. One of my top 3 highballs is Rye & Coke, so I knew I had to try some with JD. At first blush, Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola seem made for each other. When you add, say, Crown Royal to Coke, the two tastes fight with each other for a little bit and then fuse into something more. But Jack & Coke barely put up a fight. They just simply fall into each other’s arms, and the taste is only slightly more than either one by themselves. Which is why, I think, it’s less satisfying.
Overall, I’d get this again and just drink it straight – although I did hear that an ounce of JD in a cup of hot tea is pleasing, so maybe that’s worth a shot.
