A review of this — 6 years ago
I’m a HUGE Ani Difranco fan and I own all her albums. I’m not reviwing them in any particular order — I just happened to start with this one tonight.
Evolve is where Ani’s basically coming to terms with maturing. She’s past the initial bitterness of early adulthood, while holding onto enough of it that she doesn’t become complacent — yet she’s really honed the skill of recognizing beauty in diversity and singing its praises. She knows that by speaking up, by singing out, she’s helping bring awareness to any number of causes and to just the basic idea of being a good person simply for its own sake.
On every one of Ani’s albums there is at least one requisite “political” song (and on most there are several) — _Evolve_’s is “Serpentine”, which is about political corruption and the disgusting power of Corporate America.
