WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie became one of my all-time favorites by chance. I didn’t expect much from it when I rented it from Blockbuster because of the names I saw in the line up—Tamyra Gray acting? Boris Kodjoe singing? Yeah right, I thought. It was actually a pretty funny idea, so I figured I’d at least get a few laughs out of the viewing (besides, regardless of how goofy an actor he is Boris is one FINE brotha to look at).

But it turns out Kodjoe’s got some skills! I was SHOCKED when I found out he really sang his own parts. He even added a touch of Marvin Gaye flavor in one of the musical numbers ( BTW, Marvin Gaye’s daughter Nona was also part of the cast). And Tamyra Gray held her own. She actually did some good acting and she was beautiful in this movie.

My favorite part of the DVD is the extended musical performance of Yolanda Adams’ Victory. The choreography and those violins were on point! I played it over and over with my children.

By the way, this movie was refreshingly family friendly. It had a very pleasant and uplifting ending.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A lot of the themes were a little “Oprah”-ish…overblown drama between the new pastor and his wife for instance. More could have been made of the conflict between some members of the congregation and the church leadership over the introduction of the “D.T.” character on the stage. (Traditionally, many in the church will chafe at the presence of someone who makes their living recording “the Devil’s music” singing gospel.)

Probably worth seeing once, but I doubt I’ll make it part of the collection. The music is the best part of the flick with appearances from gospel biggies Martha Munizzi, Fred Hammond, and Yolanda Adams. (Donnie McClurkin also appears as an actor but doesn’t sing.)

WORTH CONSUMING!

the idea that god loves us no matter what we do is a powerful one. to know that we are allowed to make our own choices, are own mistakes, and we will never be turned away, that the love is unending and unconditional is amazing. i myself am still on that struggle. it’s hard for me to put that much blind trust into someone but i love the idea and it warms my soul.
