Surrealistic but lacking substance — 51 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The movie reminded me of The Science of Sleep somewhat; however, I liked Being John Malkovich much more, for the humor and for some attempts at philosophy. I had been previously exposed to much science fiction about mind transfer, so the idea in the movie was nothing new, and it did not unleash any “can of metaphysical worms”.

As another reviewer put it, “Even if you enjoy fringe cinema as I do, you will find no substance in this film to satisfy you, only a huge hollow space around which there is a thinly woven plot.”

I still liked it, but would not watch it again, or recommend it to someone for their edification.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’d give it 3 1/2 stars if possible. It’s far from a perfect film, but it does have some moments that make it worth it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

”...maybe Gary Sinise.” – John Malkovich.
I watched this when it first came out and admitedly didn’t think it was that great and now this second viewing has changed my opinion I quite like it and it turns out it is very funny.
maybe it’s just how much mockery is involved.

Not quite mad enough — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

On second viewing, I was reminded of the mad genius of screen writer Charlie Kaufman, but realised there was much to dislike and be disappointed with in what I remembered to be a near-perfect film. It’s hard when you, as an audience member, find you really don’t like the main character, with whom you are supposed to be empathising with. And while the chaotic surreality of the film is incredibly original, I was left feeling its ‘kookiness’ was somewhat superficial, and that Kaufman’s brilliance was only beginning to emerge – evident, I think, in ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
