Tim Burton's Americana Gothic — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Edward Scissorhands is one of the two movies that I can always point to whenever someone says “Tim Burton is a talentless hack”, and yes, that has happened. Once. (The other movie, by the way, is Ed Wood.) Edward Scissorhands is the best example of Tim Burton combining his twin obsessions with Traditional Family Values and Quirky Darkness, creating a Grimm’s fairy tale for the 20th Century. The visuals in this movie are amazing. The set design is incredible, able to contain both a hyperrealistic suburban neighborhood and a gothic mad scientist’s tower. Thanks to costume and makeup, Edward is one of the most immediately recognizable characters in American film. But the acting’s good too. The movie rests on Johnny Depp’s incredible physical acting; his facial expressions as Edward are alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Dianne Wiest brings real depth to what could have been a flat suburban housewife caricature. And to top it all off, Vincent Price puts in what could be his best performance ever. Edward Scissorhands is a family movie that’s not afraid to be dark and is infinitely rewatchable to boot. It’s Tim Burton’s masterpiece.

One of my favorites. It’s quite sad. I especially love the music.

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of my all time favorite movies. The film is shot wonderfully. It is a movie my children and I can enjoy together. Best thing is Anthony Michael Hall is buff in this flick.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Deliciously creepy. Slow and melancholy, but sweet. It’s the story of a unfortunate, disfigured Edward who has scissors for hands. The creation of some mad inventor who never gave him arms, Edward goes through life unbothered until he encounters a certain girl and becomes enveloped in a family and a neighborhood that cannot fully accept him.

So sad. But so, so good.
