A story about this — 3 years ago
I read the Ishiguro book for my A-levels and loved the story then, as I do now. The film is a very faithful adaptation that is true to both the letter and the spirit of the book, but simply can’t capture everything (for instance, it’s not quite as clear in the movie how obsessed Stevens is with butlering and how important it is to him personally, how much his sense of self-worth is tied up with it. Also his deluded belief that he and Lord Darlington are buddies doesn’t really make it into the movie.)
Nuanced and completely shattering.
