Not nearly as bad as people lead on, but not great by any stretch of the imagination. You have to get past the fact you’re essentially watching a porno flick. Once you do that, the very interesting life of Caligula becomes the focal point. The film, for all of its faults, is a meticulously researched look into his life and reign as Caesar. While it leaves out some facts (such as his first two wives and the fact he hated the nickname Caligula), it’s fairly accurate down to such small details as his concerns about being bald and the much-discussed death of his daughter. Poorly acted and written in parts, well acted and written in others (but horribly directed throughout), Caligula is a mildly interesting and entertaining mess.
