I watched this movie a few weeks ago and found it very good and quite entertaining … as a romantic comedy with an historical touch. I have no idea as to why this was made Best Picture, especially over Life is Beautiful which may be one of my favorite movies ever. I guess the non-american nature of Life is Beautiful was against it.
Again, this comment is not against Shakespeare in Love, which I liked, especially for all the references to Shakespeare (duh!) and for the godly Colin Firth, even though he’s not so admirable in this! An anecdote about this: it’s probably the only movie with a title that I find better in French: Shakespeare et Juliette (Shakespeare and Juliet) is cuter and more subtle than Shakespeare in Love. That didn’t stop me from watching the movie in English though, even if French is my mother tongue!
And finally, the bonus features on this DVD are lenghtier than I thought (especially considering its very small price). But I would have loved to see the making-of more extended, and did we really need all those TV spots with minimum changes to them? 4 or 5 would have been enough.
