Although I enjoyed this book, I was often thoroughly confused. How does anyone come away from this book thinking that it is some magical story about love that never dies? Like Arethusa I found nearly all of the characters to be repugnant, both personally and in a moral sense. How is any of this even remotely romantic?

God, what a dreary read so far. Catherine is a self-absorbed bitch and Heathcliff a manipulative bastard. I can only occasionally drum up sympathy for the idiotic Isabella and the sanctimonious Nelly.
Well, I’m at Vol. II now and no doubt all that’s left to read is the action and consequences of Heathcliff’s grief and vengeance.
Well. It is something to be experienced but I’ll not be reading this novel again. Some of the characters aren’t quite believable and seeing most of Heathcliff’s evil plans coming to fruitation…
At least the ending wasn’t so bad and, implausible characters aside, Bronte does have a passionate and skilfull pen.

Emily Bronte’s “Wurthering Heights” simply does not appeal to me. The writing is exceptional but the content fails to grab my attention.
