i don’t know if a person can “enjoy” a book like this, but i certainly was enthralled with it. i first picked it up at a thrift store not knowing much about it. i just kind of skimmed through it and threw it in my basket.
after a few months of letting it collect dust on my bookshelf, i pulled it down and started reading it and didn’t stop all night. the book put me in some kind of spell and i felt like i was sucked into this world with jeremiah and sarah and the evil grandparents. it almost had the same affect on me as my vc andrews books did when i was a little girl!
jt leroy, whether his memoirs are true are not, is a talented writer regardless. shocking as the book is, it’s closer to any truth than most memoirs will come to – whether the truth is actually leroy’s to tell or not.

When I read about the whole J.T. Leroy hoax thing I had to read this book. It was rough stuff, but I thought it was well-written and it definitely kept my interest. However, I think I would’ve liked it even more if I was under the (false) impression that the author had really been through all of these things and lived to tell the story. But it was really just some rich white woman. I guess that’s why it was a great marketing scheme.
