Not bad if you expect it to be bad — 1 year ago

There’s a lot of style here and not much substance, and the style is…well, just as weird as the cartoon on MTV was. If you realize it’s going to be eye candy, like Ultraviolet was eye candy, it’s not that bad.

There’s something about duff sci-fi that still draws me in: even though I know going into that it’s going to be rubbish, I still like seeing what the ideas are, what set/costume design can dazzle me.

This was okay on the latter, and even the former – daft as it was – had a reasonable twist.

However, the whole thing just doesn’t piece together well at all, and slow motion gymnastics from Charlize Theron in black lycra padded out a lack of real plot. I’m sure at least half of the audience wasn’t complaining, but it got a bit samey.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This film is saved (made?) by Charlize Theron’s uncanny ability to take over every scene. Even when she is not in a scene, you hunger to see her in the next one. Could this possibly be the same woman who played in “Monster?” Yes! Forget the SciFi plot, the “twist” and “eco-warning,” all of which have been around in film at least as long as Charlton Heston in “Soylent Green” or “Planet of the Apes.” Great photography and one of the hottest warrior women going make this definitely worth watching.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Lame-o. You could give it a star or two for the pretty factor if it wasn’t so blatantly ripping off ‘The Matrix’ (and doing a far worse job of it). The storyline, however, was completely uninspired: unoriginal for one thing, but also just very simple, like it was considered the unfortunately necessary coathanger they needed to hang some pretty shots on in order to get them into a cinema. Most of all, though, I found it a really disappointing addition to a genre that generally uses futuristic or similar settings to explore and inspire thought about issues being faced at present. This did none of that… although this probably a good thing given the very simplistic and black-and-white Good Vs Evil plot going on in it. No greys to think about, no contradictions or challenges or character growth or any of that “human condition” stuff, at all. Which is what in the end makes it so unbelievable and uninteresting.

The basic plot of this really works. And I wanted to like it. It is hard to imagine not liking seeing Charlize like this – think Matrix meets Gattica. But somehow, it just never finishes. The sequences are polished and clean but it reminds me of the movies I made in my backyard as a kid – sometimes the effects aren’t the problem, its the stringing together of scenes that don’t really pull the pieces together. Enjoyable just not quite done.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I found it to be an excellent science fiction movie, with one major plot hole ruining the “science” that could have been easily avoided. Unfortunately, I cannot say what the plot hole was without spoiling the twist.

Very cool special effects, costumes and sets. Weak character development.

The movie Aeon Flux is enjoyable for the special effects and action sequences, but little else. The “science” is so totally off-base that it left me incredibly annoyed, despite the sfx and good action sequences. I hesitate to classify this as science fiction.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Better than expected, but I can see that it could have been much much more.
Charlize in that black straight hair-do has never looked better.
