Seriously, after a long hiatus, getting back into this novel was pure pleasure. I came at it from a slightly lazy approach, choosing to not get hung up by my own ignorance of the subtext. (Despite the thorough end notes and fascinating introduction I’m certain I missed a lot of meaning.) And the translation is so good. It reads like a perfect English-language novel.

Without fail, after reading a chapter or two before going to sleep, I have terrible dreams. I don’t know why.

It’s a little creepy. I feel haunted.

Part of me would like to give up and remove the book from the house, while another part of me feels drawn toward it by a weird craving.

Can a book make you go slightly insane?

I read this book while visiting Moscow, which made a great book even better. I stood outside Sadovaya 302-b and beside Patriarch’s Pond. The Master and Margarita was highly entertaining and imaginative. I enjoyed the political satire and its religious twist.

Engaging and utterly surreal.
