WORTH CONSUMING!

dark and depressive biographical introspective comics. not bad. good colors, good paper. it’s not terribly life changing but i like that sort of feeling you get when what you are reading doesn’t really seem to take you anywhere at the end. like a stroll in the mind of some random character.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Pretty good. Honestly, most of the dialogue and plot didn’t really excite me – way too depressing and pitiful for my taste. Still, I enjoyed the story. It was interesting to see Seth’s obsession with this Kalo character, even if I didn’t understand it.
The stand-out quality in the book was the illustrations, though. The panels that depicted places in Toronto (notably Union Station) felt just like I was there. I really liked the clean simple lines that were used when drawing the characters as well. Oh, except for Chet. Chet looked awful.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Morose introspection! I like it. More notable, however, is the beautiful choice of color. Black and greyish-blue on creamy white paper. Each part ends with a black page with full bleeds, like a fade to black. It makes you love books.

Well, it has been a while since I read a book that I didn’t recommend, but this was the one. The graphics were wonderful, but the story! OK it was depressing, reading about one man’s obsession with a failed cartoonist who lived in Canada. An obsession that is somehow related to his string of failed relationships and lack of a meaningful career. At least it was a quick read. For graphic novels, I still strongly recommend Blankets by Craig Thompson.
