WORTH CONSUMING!

I was not expecting much from this movie but it was lot better than I thought it was going to be. It’s kind of an old fashioned vampire movie but with the 30 days of night twist where the hero has to survive for a month in freezing Alaska while being stalked and chased by a band of nasties.

I am not a big fan of Josh (wooden acting) Hartnett but he seemed to fit in well here as the laid back Sheriff of a small Alaskan town (the most northerly town in America).

The vampires are scary enough and have all the usual characteristics (can’t go out during the day, drink blood etc.) They are a tough bunch though and not easy to dispatch – an axe comes in handy about half way through the film.

If you like traditional (non-slasher) horror films that have a reasonable plot and better than average acting then this is worth a look in.

WORTH CONSUMING!

except that when i saw it, it was called 30 dias de noche. we bought this from a street vendor in mexico for a dollar. it was actually a pretty good cam video, and the spanish subtitles made it even more charming.
as for the actual movie..silly. my girlfriend wanted to see it because she had read the graphic novels, so i went along. josh hartnett is..meh. better than i thought he was going to be. but overall, i just didnt really care about any of the characters, they were all just vampire food as far as i was concerned. didnt really spend enough time explaining any backstories or anything. as far as the rest, it was pretty good actually. though the ending was..a bit melodramatic. in the end, there are better vamp flicks.

One thing that this movie did, that I must point out: in an early scene, (altogether too young) sheriff Josh Hartnett pulls out an asthma inhaler and takes a hit, making pretty much everybody roll their eyes or groan, expecting a later tense moment when it’s going to be just out of reach when he needs it most.

Except that (spoiler warning!!!!) it never happens. Unless it did while I had fallen asleep, I guess.

I had to see this as my partner did a lot of the vampire screams for it!! The post production sound effects were recorded here in Wellington NZ.

It’s an okay film but not amazing. I cannot think of a lot to say about it, you’ve got to just take it for what it is, not expect too much nor a deep plot/meaning.
