A review of this — 4 years ago
A reread – I first read this when it came out in four volumes from Vertigo, but it’s been a while, and I’m prepping for the movie. (Yes, I know – it’s been out for 3 days. I’m late.)
I like it a lot. Gaiman’s quirky fantastic storytelling really works here, and Vess’s illustrations serve to augment the text. There are crazy and absurd things, and reasonable mundane events as well, and nearly everything works out as it should.
Of course, this just means I’m more scared to see the movie – I just watched the trailer and nearly didn’t recognize the move, but I’m told that that’s just the way it is, and that the movie’ll be more like the book. I can only hope.
