WORTH CONSUMING!

Stupid, silly, farcical fare. And funny, too. Jack Black is gonzo as “Nacho,” a Mexican friar at an orphanage by day and a winless wannabe wrestler by night. He’s got the hots for Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera), but there’s nothing about the budding relationship that would strip this film of its PG rating. Supporting role by tag team partner Héctor Jiménez deserves praise (“I don’t believe in God; I believe in science”). Nacho’s second match-up gives a whole new meaning to “midget wrestling.” Give it a look.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Just…bad. The right adjective has not be invented to describe just how bad this thing is. Granted, I don’t like Jack Black, but I have a number of friends who love him and they all hated this movie. That’s pretty telling.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I happened to catch this on a planeride, went in with no expectations, came out laughing. Maybe not a brilliant movie, and not a classic for the ages, but enough weird and awkward scenes to provide a good laugh.

WORTH CONSUMING!

But It was very funny I couldnt stop laughing I still quote the movie sometime. “Sometimes you wear stretchy pants…It’s for fun!”

I can’t say this is a bad movie. A lot of love went into the making of this. Love for the characters, love for the setting (Mexico, where this was filmed). I enjoyed Ana de la Reguera as Sister Encarnación (and I’m going to have to track down some of her other movies).

But where Napoleon Dynamite came off as charmingly quirky to me, Nacho Libre came off as a little strained and affected. Jared Hess should try less to be Wes Anderson and a little more to be himself.

Stupidest movie ever — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My wife and I agreed that this was a very dumb movie. The difference was that I thought it was great and she would have rather seen something else. Napolean Dynomite would be a good gauge to use to see if you would like this movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s not near as good as Napoleon, but it’s still worth a look see. There are some very funny moments but most of it was just “huh?” but i’m wondering if it will improve on numerous viewings as Napoleon did. Jack Black certainly delivers, the only (semi) recognizable face.

Just a cute and funny kids film. Appropriate for all ages. Keeps your attention, well worth the 7 bucks.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I never wanted to see this movie, but my friends did and I was obliged to tag along. It was just so incredibly boring! Most of the jokes come courtesy of Jack Black being Jack Black, and if you’ve seen any of the ads you’ve seen all the jokes. I do praise the production however for hiring nearly an all-latino cast and if I remember right, an all-latino crew.

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you didn’t like Napoleon Dynamite you very probably won’t like Nacho Libre. There is a goofy earnestness to the whole film in an almost anachronistic way. While there is more of a structure than Napoleon Dynamite it doesn’t have the same feeling. It’s a bit darker, but there are some infantile, but funny jokes and everything is taken pretty much as far as it can go. The slapstick is way over the top, but some of the scenes between the characters are sweet. Overall it’s not very deep or profound, but good if you like that sort of thing.

WORTH CONSUMING!

(Posted from All Consuming)

Today, we plopped down our $11 to see Jack Black in Nacho Libre . I’ve been known to thoroughly enjoy stupid movies. In my “stupid movie” category, I put such classics as Happy Gilmore, Zoolander, and Anchorman. Nacho Libre is stupider than all of them.

By the end of the movie, my smile muscles and gut-bustage-preventing muscles were hurting. Sure, the movie is offensive to Catholics, Mexicans, and Catholic Mexicans. But between The Da Vinci Code and the House Republicans, those groups have bigger things to worry about.

Nacho Libre is full of slapstick the likes of which I haven’t seen since The Three Stooges. The dialogue, the facial expressions, the body language were all perfect. And Black’s sidekick Héctor Jiménez was a true find. I want to see this movie again and again. I can’t wait until Comedy Central inevitably picks it up and shows it 4 times a weekend.
