NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Uh… nothing about this I found humorous. Sorry?! I didn’t laugh a single time throughout the whole thing.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Within the first ten or so minutes of groaning “God, he’s jumped the shark!”, I’m glad I stayed and finished this flick. He, referring to Simon Pegg who I’ve been a fan of since Spaced (oh the good ol’ days). Fortunate indeed. His recent work before this – that one where he’s a tv producer something or other (a total waste of time) and even Hot Fuzz was only so-so; you know how some people expect to be disappointed when they go in to see something, so when it’s only mediocre (as opposed to flat out terrible) they’ll be “Oh, well that’s not so bad then is it?”

I wasn’t. The trailers for RFR didn’t excite me, I paid no attention to the sparse hype (was there even any?), I tuned out any conversation that even barely hinted at any mention of the words, fat, boy, run, &c. To the quick: I kept clean and spoiler free.

Oh but you don’t know how big a Pegg fan I am. So, what’ve we got here. No funny sidekick but instead it’s the annoying Dafs, Davs, however you spell it – from Shaun. Okay…. what else you got? Thandie Newton looking none the worse for wear but still not quite able to act. A kid. He stays in the picture. And a slew of side characters that may or may not produce chuckles. Cos, of course. Stereotype humour works really well. Maybe.

But I did stick until the end. Good choice. The semi-ok pace of a predictable plot, unnecessary side angles, and other gimmicky, distracting nonsense you’d expect from an inexperienced director – Schwimmer of Friends (a defunct American tv sitcom) – comes together in a tale of human redemption that, whether you’re for him or not, makes you cheer on for the

a. underdog
b. guy down on his luck but, hey, there’s hope!
c. poor bloke who wants to turn things around
d. all of the above
e. actor whom you’ve liked since Spaced, I mean…

C’mon, it’s Simon Pegg, man. Show a little love. Schwimmer, on the other hand. We’ll see. Run Fatboy Run is not a horrible drama comedy nor is it a laugh out loud it’ll have you rolling in the aisles comedy. It’s just there, waiting for the best best bits to become memorable.

This movie is recommended for a matinee or in a second-run theatre, or wait for the video when it comes out, wait a little more and buy the used dvd for about the cost of a small box of popped corn.
