A story about this — 1 year ago
This series and I hit it off right from the start: the right mix of comedy and pathos, and a total, total irreverance for pretty much everything!
Hank is a complete lothario, seemingly with a new woman every night, and yet somehow he comes across as rather sweet. He might be working his way through LA’s female population, but he does appear to have more respect for them than half do for themselves. His relationship with his daughter helps balance everything out, and that with his ex-partner to add a vague explanation.
As the series progressed it got a bit more serious with fewer chuckles, but it served well to draw me in. And that’s despite an early dislike to pretty much all of the main characters, bar David Duchovny’s louche Hank.
Of course, there IS a lot of sex and nudity (DD is an excellent advert for dating older men! ;)) so not one for the faint hearted. On the other hand, it seemed a lot less in your face (bad choice of phrase, given one of the later episodes ;)) than the scenes in The Tudors, and Californication is warning you from the start what it’s about!
The ending almost disappointed me – jury’s still out – and I’m almost surprise they aren’t leaving things as they are. Still, I’m not complaining about a second series, I just hope it can live up to the first!
