NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Umm. I gave up. I quit reading about 140 pages in.

It was just boring and I didn’t find the characters or scenarios engaging at all. I kept finding myself avoiding reading it, which is very uncharacteristic. A actually told me that he has never seen me read a book so slowly. Which might be true.

Maybe it was a translation issue because there were also SO many grammatical problems along the lines of “Bob and Fred were talking. He told him that he did not want to talk anymore.” Wait… what?! Who did what with whom where why??

I got really tired of having to re-read sentences that just made no grammatical sense and the plotlines and general style were not such that I am willing to forgive poor grammar.

WORTH CONSUMING!

My second Marquez, after reading and loving 100 Years of Solitude. Reading a second book by him, the whole Magical Realism, ever-so-slight-warping-of-reality thing starts to feel like a schtick after awhile, but damn, it’s a really excellent and well-executed schtick and it keeps me coming back. This one is a lot more personal and character-based than 100 Years, with several very well-drawn and complex characters, who are more than just avatars for other things. And of course, more of Marquez’s slightly askew world-building genius too. However, in the end, the ambiguity over whether the protagonist and his obsessive love are admirable or monstrous is what really interested me the most. I love me a novel where you end up unsure whether you even like the protagonist or not after you’ve just spent several hundred pages immersed in their world and worldview. Challenging and interesting stuff, though maybe not for everybody because of that.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of the best books I’ve read for ages about love and relationships. The characters felt really real to me even though their setting is so foreign. Its been on my list of reading for years, I’m glad I finally got round to reading it.

Its the first book by Marquez I’ve read. Must read some more.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Marquez is an unbelievably talented author. His characters are vividly real and memorable. He makes absolutely every word count, and he does it with such splendor and passion that his books become an addiction.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Love in the Time Of Cholera, I picked up this book from my institute’s library, for only one reason that it is written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Though the book jacket has generous dose of praise by Observer, NY Times, The Times etc. yet that would have not been suffice to attract my attention and hold it (these days almost all the books have favorable reviews from one or another publication/critics).
After reading around 30-40 pages…read more at http://mouthshut.com/review/Love_In_The_Time_of_Cholera_-_Gabriel_Garcia_Marquez-75020-1.html
