This girls & booze loser-comedy is raunchy and explicit, yet charming. It is highly quotable and displays an instant-nerd-classic quality.
Too long? Definitely. The Policemen-McLovin storyline was overstretched and spoiled the main characters’ dynamics.
Superbad depicts adolescence in all it’s glory. Foul language – check; alcohol-inflicted barfing – check; spitting bullies – check.
Although I found the flick enjoyable, Superbad failed to make me laugh out laud, most of the time I only chuckled. I’ve expected it to be hysterical it turned out to be only cute, in it’s gross outteenage-guys-talk sort of way.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Hilariously good. I personally loved The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, and Superbad definitely feels like – as some website called it – their “little brother”. Whereas Virgin was all about sex and growing up, responsibility, etc., Superbad focuses on that transition from high school to college. You know, that whole myth you see in movies about how you need to lose it before you get to college.

Michael Cera and Jonah Hill are great together, as a previous reviewer wrote, but I also think some of the other characters (Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) added to a lot of the hilarity.

Sure, it feels like a teen film, and the language and content will probably turn some people off (one of my friends was a bit grossed out), but if you can laugh at sex jokes and don’t mind a fair bit of cursing, you’ll be fine.

Anyone who’s definitely seen and loved Virgin and Knocked Up will definitely dig Superbad.

  • Plot: Fairly standard story about the night of a high school graduation party and outsiders hoping to lose their virginity. Reminded me of Can’t Hardly Wait. The story lags in certain segments, particularly those involving the two cops. The scene related to Seth’s childhood sketches caused the audience to roar, though.
  • Dialogue: Snappy but unexceptional. The movie derives a lot of its humor and shock value from having high schoolers speak about women and sex in terms that you might associate with dockworkers.
  • Acting: Jonah Hill and Michael Cera complement each other well and demonstrate a strong rapport. The scene in which they express their affection for each other is both bold and sweet. Hill is a very assured comic actor who will do well in future roles. I wonder if his weight and appearance will restrict his opportunities…I can see him as a new Zero Mostel.
  • Other: A little bit of Bill Hader goes a long way.
