NOT WORTH CONSUMING

....claimed he “LOVED” grindhouse movies, Tarantino really missed the mark on what a grindhouse movie feels like. It had flashes of true grindhouse experience, but over all it felt like something was lacking.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Watched this movie last night on DVD. I really enjoyed it and it shows what a unique talent Quentin Tarantino is, and so attuned to the times. And tbh this movie was refreshingly free of the sadistic violence that is so often in his movies (there were bits of violence, but nothing squirmy).

It starts out with the first lot of women talking in a car, in the kind of back n forth hip talk that we saw in Pulp Fiction. All the women actors are great, as is Kurt Russell as a grizzled yet enigmatic stuntman.

Later in the film I was pleasantly surprised to see a kiwi actress, who turns out is a real-life stunt woman! Hearing a kiwi accent in a Tarantino movie was strange, yet satisfying!

The car chase sequence at the end is pure adrenalin, very well shot.

Overall this is a great action movie, with all the artistic touches you’d expect from Tarantino (without ever being predictable).

Go the kiwi stuntwoman! A real person in a film – now that is cutting edge.

WORTH CONSUMING!

My initial reaction to this movie was that it was Tarantino’s best. It might take a couple more watches, and perhaps a side-by-side viewing with Pulp Fiction, to convince me otherwise, but my first impression with the movie was one of utter glee from start to finish. Loved it.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This might have made a pretty decent short movie. The dialogue dragged on and on and on. And I love dialogue. I love whole movies where nothing happens but people talk. But there was just too much talking in this movie. Maybe the problem wasn’t too much dialogue, just the whole self-satisfied nature of it. Too much of it felt like it was trying to be another “royal with cheese.” Trying, and failing miserably. Also annoying—way too many homages…to his own films. Not even subtle ones at that. How much of an ego maniac do you have to be to reference your own movies?

It did come together nicely at the end though. Which, sadly, seems to be a rare thing lately. The car chases were fun and I really liked “Zoe the cat” and the fact that she’s actually a stuntwoman who does her own stunts makes it all the better.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Tarantino irritated me far less than usual with this. Reminded me of how good he is as a screenwriter. Nothing really happens, but you’re engaged. I had missed that.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Utterly violent, utterly irresponsible, utterly trashy. To sum up: wonderful.

WORTH CONSUMING!

50 minutes of boring bimbos followed by an hour of flying body parts and car crashes. There were some extremely vivid scenes, and some very gruesome ones. Overall, a forgettable movie despite the shock value.
