A story about this — 1 year ago
I heard the song Autonomy Boy and was completely entranced so I scraped together what little cash I had and bought this one which was the only title in the racks.
I went up to the register and the cashier commented on my selection and we started talking about old punk (gang of four, wire, old chicago punk) and high school before I had to leave because of the long line. A shy quiet and defiant boy defining his place in this world. I was flooded with memories and the image of holding albums, cassetes and later cds in my hands looking at them with awe as if their properties were magical (they are!). I felt suddenly protective of him as if he and my younger self were one in the same. How do you “cheer” someone in “real” life? You know? Keep on pushing….
I agree with rimesparse, it’s not derivatve at all. It makes me want to dance. Really jump up and just let loose. Hanif Kureishi once said, “You can’t dance to fiction.”
My favorite lyric from a song off the bonus disc:
“If you want to know me, watch how I dance.”
