Thank god it was still playing. — 4 years ago
I’m glad I caught this before they stopped playing it at my local AMC. First off, I absolutely love The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It’s quite possibly one of my favorite movies, and it’s one I can watch over and over without getting bored. That being said, I feel like Knocked Up hits on many of the same points its predecessor did.
Both films have pretty much the same kind of theme: first experiences (sex, love, relationships, family), learning to cope with newfound responsibilities, and ultimately reconciling and overcoming differences. Knocked Up deals more with marriage and family matters, and does deal with some serious issues that real couples face, but the comedy aspect is brought to the forefront thanks to Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd. Heh, and Steve Carrell even makes a hilarious little cameo as himself.
I’m trying to think about anything I didn’t like about the film, and honestly there wasn’t really anything that serious. The film was somewhat long, but I actually thought it was perfectly timed. In fact, sometimes the film felt a bit rushed in certain places. I think if anything, a bit more character development could’ve been employed; the roommates felt incredibly unnecessary.
All in all, Knocked Up is a great comedy. If, like me, you enjoyed The 40-Year-Old Virgin you should enjoy this.
