There are two important stories in this film brought out by SONY with the Irish Film Board. One is the search of a transgender youth for love and a place in society. The other is a tale of hatred and strife born of politics.
Patty “Kitten” Braden (played deliciously by Cillian Murphy) seeks identity, love, and his biological parents amid the ever-intruding civil unrest in Ireland. Car bombs, hidden stashes of guns, and terrorist tactics serve as horrifying counterpoint to Kitten’s journey. Lethal conflict seems to take away a life each time a truth is found or a friend is made.
Director Neil Jordan’s skill is evident in every scene. The acting is of very high caliber. In particular, Liam Neeson plays conflicted Catholic Father Bernard with his usual on-screen charisma. Do see this. It’s an eye-opener.
