A story about this — 4 years ago
Even though everyone seems to recommend Cunningham, I found the book a bit contradictory. He talks about how your personal psychology is the most important part of Wiccan practice, saying something along the lines of “it’s not the structure of the ritual that makes magic, it’s your belief in it that does”—in other words, the magic isn’t in the candles, the herbs or the runes themselves. But then most of the book is dedicated to giving extremely specific information for practicing “correctly,” as in, using a GREEN candle with a WHITE ribbon and a stick of MYRRH-scented incense and chanting THREE TIMES (etc), when it seems like these specifics shouldn’t be the point. Maybe this is more in line with universal correspondences, and maybe this has more to do with my frustrations with Wicca than anything else, but I found his emphasis on structure and form quite contradictory.
