WORTH CONSUMING!

Not as funny as Shaun of the Dead, but it was close – easily the second best effort from Simon Pegg ;)

Plus, I’ve stayed in that hotel!! New claim to fame :)

WORTH CONSUMING!

GENIUS!

Stoopidly genius like.

Typical Simon Pegg, and I loved the fence reference to Shaun of the dead, and the fact that the ending was so absolutely bloody unbelieveable just made me laugh all the more. And the reason I like people who like this? Basically because they have the ability to get over themselves and laugh for the sake of it.

Great soundtrack too.

Hot Fuzz: "By The Power Of Greyskull!" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I waited to see Shaun of the Dead on DVD, not knowing for sure whether or not I liked it (I ended up liking it very much). I vowed not to make the same mistake with Hot Fuzz. I ended up enjoying it very much, moreso even than SotD, and I wonder if that’s a) because I genuinely like the genre they were sending up more in this one, or b) because of the big screen. Possibly both, possibly neither. Doesn’t matter, though. In the end, Hot Fuzz was one hundred percent worth the money I paid for it in the theater. And that’s saying something.

Nick Angel (Simon Pegg) is a London supercop who gets reassigned to Sanford, a small village where the crimes that do occur go essentially unpunished by the local police force, headed by Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent). But when he uncovers some of Sanford’s better-kept secrets, it’s up to him and his new partner, Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) to enforce the law. HARDCORE STYLE.

The great thing about Hot Fuzz is that it’s a parody with heart. The guys love cop movies and know all the tropes and conventions, so when they play with them they don’t seem forced or awkward. Because of that, the film works as a parody AND as an action movie. Actually, the film effectively spoofs both a police procedural and a high-octane action film, which might put some viewers off, but I personally loved it. (I was also apparently the only person in the theater who got the “Forget it Nick…it’s Sanford.” line, so your mileage may vary.) Frost and Pegg have really stepped up their acting game since SotD, and carry the film rather well, and the entire ensemble is quirky but believable, which is very important to this particular film, which keeps you on your toes the whole way through.

It’s very gory, much more so than I was expecting, but that’s about the only negative thing I can say about it. It’s not perfect, but it’s well put together, and I enjoyed it far more than the most recent Michael Bay or Jerry Bruckheimer fiascos. Hot Fuzz is smart, slick, and above all, even has a bit of heart in it. Must-watch if you’re an action movie fan.

WORTH CONSUMING!

The best parodies make fun of a genre, yet are also an entertaining work within that genre. Examples include Shaun of the Dead (of course), the South Park Movie (musicals), and to a lesser extent Galaxy Quest.

Hot Fuzz was an amazing action movie. I’m a bigger fan of action than horror, so I liked it even more than Shaun. It does crack me up that nerdy little Simon Pegg has gone from ironic accidental badass to unabashed badass.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It was worth consuming, but not worth the exclamation mark. The acting was stellar, but I just couldn’t get into it. I had really high hopes, so maybe that was the problem. I’ll probably watch it again.

Belly Laughs — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s strange and yet totally believeable that the last movie I have seen that made me laugh this much was ‘Shaun of the Dead’ (by and starring the same people).

There’s just something about British humor. Somehow it goes way farther than American humour without ever having to sink lower.

There’s not much to say about it. You’d have to be SO prudish not to laugh at this movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the pleasures of genre films is seeing filmmakers work within a set of rules and play with conventions. The usual strategy for a parody is to choose a film or set of films and then make fun of the absurdity of the situation. With Hot Fuzz the approach could be to take a few cop / action films and then show the absurdity of the situations, but the team of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (along with actor Nick Frost) do a lot more.
I first became a fan of the team when by accident a few years ago I caught the series Spaced which briefly aired on a channel in Canada and then seemed to disappear. Luckily I was able to find out more about the series from the fan web site. Spaced is a unique sitcom that has usual sitcom conventions, but is filled with elaborate references to science fiction films, video games and other elements of popular culture. I instantly loved it have been a fan ever since.
Following up Shaun of the Dead with Hot Fuzz had me excited as with the earlier film they created a wonderful, but respectful reworking of the zombie film that embraced and poked fun at the conventions of the genre. In Hot Fuzz they build the film around characters and situations that work within the rules of the genre while having fun with them. What is great about the film is that it doesn’t ever become patronizing or insult the intelligence of the audience. The jokes grow out of the plot and characters and there are some wonderful surprises and action sequences. Beautifully structured and never straying outside the well-defined lines of the cop movie, it manages to lovingly embrace the genre while having fun with it. It’s solid, intelligent and funny.

Best Cop Movie Ever!! — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

“By the power of Grayskull!” Shawn of the Dead has to be the best all around zombie film ever, and Hot Fuzz is the best Cop movie ever! Take note American comedy films, you can be funny, and crazy without being stupid. I’m looking at you Will Ferrell, and Rob Schneider!

Slow first half. Everything explodes in the second. References to many silly action Hollywood movies – but in the end it’s all about Pegg and Frost’s chemistry. This one’s good for a few chuckles. But if you want the really good stuff, it’s Spaced and SotD for ya.

Why I recommend this — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Hot Fuzz has to be the funniest film I’ve seen all year, and perhaps longer. I really can’t recommend this enough, if you liked Shaun of the Dead, then you’ll love this too, I was a little worried that perhaps after such a fantastic film, they would have trouble matching it, but they do wonders with their take on cop films.

Go and see it, right now.
