What Sromkie Said! — 5 years ago
Sromkie’s review hit the nail on the head. Mine is the extensive, ranty version (with a few things thrown in.)
Very few songs stood out on this album. I spent my preteen years listening to Avril’s first album and I still can appreciate some of the songs today (considering how old she was at the time, considering how old I was at the time.) But her work hasn’t matured at all.
If anything it’s all her old stuff with a bitchy tone. Many of the songs were just her boosting her own ego. Avril’s 23 (or was when the album came out,) married, and still making the songs of a 16 year old pop star. Hell, I’m 16 and I wouldn’t write songs like this!
Though her lyrics have never been her strong point, I literally laugh out loud at the lyrics of “I Don’t Have to Try.” It has to be one of the worst examples of songwriting I have ever seen. There is no redeeming the line “I’m the one that wears the pants.”
Girlfriend is the most overrated song of the year (don’t even get me started on that.) I think that is the only reason why this album sold.
The only reason I might give it a Worth Consuming: There were two songs that made listening to this rather terrible album worth it. “Contagious” (still in the teen tradition, but I enjoyed it) and “When You’re Gone.”
Pass this one up folks and save your money. Download “Contagious” and “When You’re Gone” on itunes.
