Not nearly as good as A Thousand Splendid Suns — 2 years ago
After reading Hosseini’s other book, ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’, this was a huge disappointment. The story line was not nearly as engrossing, the characters not very deep, and didn’t give you nearly such a good outline of the history. With ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’, I felt like I cared about the characters, and was concerned about what would happen to them, but not so here.
The events which are supposed to be emotional and sentimental do not bring these feelings to the reader. In fact, I found that little happens in the story, and it is quite boring. This especially goes for the end. I don’t want to give the end away to people who haven’t read it, so I will just say that the narrator makes a big deal of nothing. I can only assume that it is supposed to be open ended, but really… still nothing has happened.
I really don’t know why such a fuss was made over this book. I guess it was because the story is set mainly in Afghanistan, and had ‘shocking’ occurrences. Oh, well, it did nothing for me.
