A story about this — 1 year ago
same story as Jumanji, but better I think BECAUSE it doesn’t happen in the neighborhood and involve everyone else but rips the house to outer space. I also like the lost astronaut/brother aspect. And the ending.

Yeah, sure it was a kids movie, but I think it’s also a great movie for a family to see. But for some reason no one wanted to go see it with me when it came out in theatres.
It would have been a heck of a lot cooler in theatres, the special affects and graphics were rad. Pretty good for a kids movie. It does have the same element as Jumanji, but it’s really fun to think if that ever really happened, haha.
I recommend it to people who are open to anything really. But not if your’e picky with movies or don’t like movies that are predictable. Though there was a twist in the end that I was not expecting.

Great for the heavy use of real-action special effects, and the computer-generated effects when appropriate. Beyond that, its a kids movie, for kids.

Zathura is a kid’s adventure movie, almost identical in concept to Jumanji. Danny finds an old board game called Zathura in the basement of his father’s brand new house. He’s bored and wants his brother to play with him, so he unknowingly starts the game. A card is spit out when it’s your turn and whatever the card indicates happens in real life. Danny and his brother find themselves in the middle of space, travelling to Zathura and unable to stop the game in progress.
I would have loved this movie as a kid. Unfortunately I can no longer classify myself in such a manner, however, so a few things about this movie left a bad taste in my mouth. The plot twist they tried to throw with The Astronaut was extremely transparent. The children were at times so stupid their hesitation to do relatively easy things had to be written into the script as a way to draw out the length of the film. Finally, the 6 year old playing Danny was extremely annoying. I’m not sure if his character was intentionally supposed to be annoying, but I could barely listen to him argue with his brother with his huge bulging eyes.
Overall, this was much better than I expected. I’d happily watch it again.

I rented this because my son asked me to. Alex is 6, and I did a pre-view on the movie last night to see if it was good material for him. I think the movie is fun, and I don’t think it would be too scary for a 6-year-old (ymmv, etc.), but I gave it the parental thumbs-down based on 2 quotes – 1) “you are such a DICK!” (in the first 2 minutes), and 2) “this really SUCKS!”. Sure, I’m no puritan, but I’d rather not introduce these phrases into my childs lexicon… I’m sure it will come sometime, just not today…

Well…I really liked it. Would watch again. Not half as bad as the critics led me to believe. My only qualm: the youngest boy’s instance of name-calling in the first five minutes definitely raised an eyebrow. Also, I really would have loved it if the astronaut had really been…well, I don’t want to spoil it for you! :P All around, a decent movie and entertaining to boot.
