Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse is up there with Bong Joon-ho’s The Host (and Philip Gröning’s Into Great Silence) as one of my favorites this year so far.
And in case anyone wanted to know: QT’s was better than RR’s. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb here and say that Eli Roth’s “preview” for Thanksgiving was better than Planet Terror. And indeed I’ll go out on another limb and say that Death Proof is probably Tarantino’s best work since Pulp Fiction. It’s a structural marvel, plus Tarantino lets his characters simply luxuriate in the pleasures of the rhythm of simple conversation. Words, speed and metal — yeah.
This movie didn’t stop entertaining me the entire three hours it was playing. Both movies and all the trailers kept me glued to the screen.
Rodriguez’s half had everyone busting up and cringing at the same time. Tarantino’s had everyone in suspense. I don’t think a single person blinked during the first half of the car chase.
There were two firsts for me in this movie. 1) I don’t think I’ve ever been this entertained for this long by a movie. 2) I don’t think I’ve ever been more in suspense than during the first half of the car chase.
Do yourself a favor, see it in the theater.
go to a bar on a saturday afternoon within walking distance of a theater thats playing this film, knock down a couple shots of whiskey with jack and coke chasing, and then stumble in the theater barely in time to see the entirety of this movie. you will then be subject to the most entertaining three hours and twenty minutes of your life (excluding that summer you spent with a bored stripper).
