Very good alternative compilation! — 2 years ago
I’ve not heard a Rough Trade-compilation as good as this for…well, maybe ever! It’s as good as they come, combining the indieishness of Camera Obscura with Lily Allen’s noveau-kitchen-sink-with-caribbean-beats, Cold War Kids’ quite White Stripes-sounding garage (great track, that), Ripchord’s quite like Aztec Camera – on amphetamines – Richard Swift’s plain yet inviting phased singing over a good melody is inviting and enthralling, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanagan show more of their Morricone-cum-Lee-Hazlewood-ism at its best, Alva Noto And Ryuichi Sakamoto give an Aphex Twin-ish move using very warm electronics, Ladybug’s baile funk is really welcome (which Uffie’s bland track most definitely is not), Envelope brings a track sounding like punk meets “Telstar” in a good, garagey way, Erase Errata sound as if somebody’s forced a restrained Lightning Bolt to produce a garage-band.
The first disc is more pop, the second more experimental. There you go, another twist saying there’s still a lot of great, great music to come. Of course.
