Disturbing tale of two teenage girls, one of whom (Dot, played by Camilla Belle) is a deaf mute and the godchild of the other girl’s (Nina, played by Elisha Cuthbert) parents. When Dot’s father dies, she comes to live with Nina and the secrets of their separate lives slowly start coming out. Edie Falco plays Nina’s mom, a wouldbe interior designer who spends much of the film doped up on tranquilizers and trying to cope with the coldness of her husband (Martin Donovan), who is in turn victimizing their daughter. Sex, murder, betrayal … it’s all there. Not an uplifting film at all, but if you are looking for a dark story that makes your own life seem pretty normal by comparison, this is it.
