This is a beautiful story about an orphan girl named Lucky living in the California desert with her guardian, a Frenchwoman who was her father’s first wife. Lucky hopes to find her “higher power,” a concept she learned from eavesdropping on 12-step meetings. She fears her guardian will leave her. See what Lucky does with her hopes and fears.

(Oh, and the scrotum reference shouldn’t bother anyone. It’s even kind of amusing, really.)

A wonderful story. Lucky’s the sort of character I want to hug, follow around, and see what she grows up to be.
