Masquerade ball, anyone? — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I watched this as research into a masquerade ball I was getting ready to attend. …Fun flick!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I wanted to see this in the cinema, but missed out. So when I was in bed knocked out by the flu, my boyfriend rented it for me. I liked it so much I bought the DVD the next week. (and it’s still good without the fever)

The visuals are sublime, especially the use of color and light, they set the mood (as in Virgin Suicides). As for the story being ‘hollow’ or ‘shallow’, I disagree. The plot is more subtle, it is essentially a coming of age story, and centers on Marie-Antoinette’s emotions, trying to cope with the imprisonment of court life, her duties to two countries and an arranged mariage. Yet the movie never becomes tragic, there’s a light and fun touch in many scenes that balances the whole nicely.

Not so bad as to turn it off in the middle, but neither good enough to have something to say about it. It was pretty enough, but utterly blah.

forget the story line. i just lost looking at the fabrics, and the dresses.. even the wallpaper was divine.

my favorite scene was when it was just her running & being childlike in the gardens and she had on this (comparatively) simple linen dress,(which imo was the prettiest dress of the movie and i want, i want, i want:)) and the light was so gorgeous ..

for all it’s extravagance, the movie isn’t really that memorable..

but worth watching; if only for the white dress & the wallpapers;)

The French Revoution is really like...high school? — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

As a huge fan of Coppolla’s Lost in Translation, I had high hopes for this movie. And I liked it. As many have commented, it was highly visual and stylized and that didn’t bother me a bit. What was strange, was that the whole time I was watching this film I was wondering if Coppolla was making a movie about high school.

The similarities are there. The need to please parents (albeit in the form of a strategic alliance), the desire to fit in, the experience of being forced to do things, and the subsequent rebellion. The centerpiece of the film, for me, centered around this birthday party scene where M. Antoinette (played by Kirsten Dunst) stays up all night to watch the sun rise after a night of celebration. Flash back to those nights breaking curfew…

No, this film isn’t as great at Lost in Translation, but it has a different character. Perhaps this is a nostalgic meditation (that I relate to adolescence); Coppolla’s fantastically costumed reverie, commenting on frivolity, youth, excess, and tragic self-absorption. A time period common in early adulthood, but one which, we (hopefully) overcome as we grow older and find balance and contentment.

let them eat cake....lots and lots of cake — 5 years ago

while this movie was visually incredible (high color saturation, stunning costumes) the script was significantly lacking…the use of modern songs could have been done more smoothly…remember air in the virgin suicides?

this movie was basically shot after shot of kirsten dunst getting more and more attractive and staying rail thin while she mows on sweet after sweet…and to me it looked like a lot of advertising for shoes, cakes, and the lot

it was worth seeing, but don’t expect a “movie”…the plot is so thin…well, the plot is transparent

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I admit when I first saw the trailer I thought it would a movie I would enjoy. Something a little off beat – away from the normal Hollywoodism. But I was sadly mistaken. I can’t help feel I missed something of vital importance because it seems hollow, empty of any substance. I believe the actors did as well as they could have with they were given. Nothing spectacular, mind you but I am not sure any amount of excellent performances could have changed my opinion to a favorable one. All in all a waste of time and certainly a of money.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I wanted to watch this, the idea had interested me. But while I can enjoy a wide range of movies from a myriad of genres – this has been one of the greatest wastes of my time.

I can’t fault the actors as much as the story and the directing of this film. The whole movie felt hollow and dragged on and on….and when you thought it was getting close to the end….dragged on and on some more.

I really would have thought more for the actors, directors and story.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I have been wanting to see this movie for ages. This week I finally rented it out and was dissapointed. It was long and I kept thinking the whole way through it will somebody just say something!!! In the end reflecting back all it really was was her sitting next to her husband watching him eat. The only thing i can really say was nice was the clothes and the colours in the film. The grass and the scene of the sunrise was particually beautiful. As were all the cute puppies. What i thought was quite strange was the accents they were all totally different.

Why I want to consume this — 6 years ago

Copies of the DVD are for sale in the gift shops at the Versailles palace. A fashion magazine featuring Kirsten Dunst on the cover was displayed at a newsstand a short distance from where the guillotine once stood. I paused to contemplate history while resting against a rock in the darkness of a grotto in the gardens of Marie-Antoinette’s estate.

WORTH CONSUMING!

first off, i liked this movie. not love, but like. the main thing that kind of threw me off was the ending. i dont think i was the only one interested in how she was going to handle the execution. but i understand that she was attempting to put the modern concept of excess and gender roles in a historical perspective, and that the most intriguing example of both were tied up in pre-revolution Versailles. so..fine. i can be happy without chopping.

but anyway, i thought this was a good concept executed quite well. the use of modern songs, blahblahblah, everyone knows about that. i actually was expecting her to use them more than she did. cinematography was impressive, and her pacing is still as eloquent as lost in translation. she’s gotten a little better. but not much. i think she just had a lot of really big expectations, and im glad she didnt cave. its not too much either. this isnt a bad movie. and if anything, it made me want to read more about her (marie), which i did, so in at least that regard i think the movie was a success.

i was also impressed by jason schwartzman. i really dont like him that much, and i thought he did a good job in this one.

as for some of these other reviews, im afraid some of the more subtle elements of filmmaking are lost on some people. sometimes the loudest words are the ones never spoken.(cheez!) if you can identify with this concept, this movie is certainly worth your time.

Marie Antoinette — 6 years ago

This movie is worth consuming for the soundtrack, Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, the costumes, and historical storyline. It is not worth consuming for the long pauses in dialogue that I know Sophia Coppola for. Although, it is faster paced and more upbeat then Lost in Translation.

I loved this movie. It was beautifully done, and was beautiful visually. Very picturesque. I loved all the clothes and colors in the film, although, it made me want to make some cupcakes with pastel frosting.

garbage. i didn’t expect too much going into it, just to be entertained. but between the ridiculous dialogue most likely aimed at middle school girls (“I love these shoes! Can you believe she’s wearing that!?”) and the cinematics that look as if the director of Calvin Klein Eternity ads took the helm, the film became tiresome quickly.

I feel that this film took what are some interesting historical characters and didn’t do them justice. The film could have been much better if it focused on the eccentricities of the characters more instead of pairing horrible music with herpes medicine commercial camera shots.

props for using a cure song though. and the costumes were cool, even if that’s about all the movie amounted to.
