just relax ~ you are cool ~ you do not have to prove it... — 1 year ago

as you have probably read already, i read a lot. A LOT. i usually check out five or so books a week and read the one that hold my interest and get a response from me. wicked lovely almost missed the mark. i just could not get into the story. the characters seemed slightly underdeveloped and the writing a bit immature, as if marr was reaching a bit too far. (i did a bit of research and believe this to be marr’s first real book, i would not find that surprising.) i really wanted to read it though because it has an amazing idea behind it, this is where marr’s thought process and imagination really sets her apart. it’s a very different type of modern fairy tale. i would have loved to read the story as told by francesca lia block, as i think she could have done it true justice. still, once i sat down with no distractions and forced my way through the first chapter i did finally settle in and it was quite a nice read. the ending almost seemed anti-climatic and the story carries a bit of predictability. i am sure it will find it’s cult-like following as it has that type of appeal.

in the end i am glad i checked it out but i will not be putting it on my must have list, as i don’t really think that it is one i would go to and reread multiple time or that having it would add any real value to my personal library.

(next up – disco bloodbath by james st. james!!!!!!!! we are going to have so much fun with that!)

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you like any of the Modern Faerie Tales (Tithe, Valient, Ironside) by Holly Black, then you will love this book. Following in the same genre of Black’s novels here is another tale of the Fey in the the modern world.

The characters are very likable, though a bit shallower then Black’s and I thought the story a bit abbreviated. . . there was more that the author could have told in terms of backstory and character development, however, all in all a geart read, and I certainly recommend it to any and all Faerie Lovers.

WORTH CONSUMING!

My Review
Aislinn has always been able to see faeries, as could her mother and grandmother. But she’s always lived by Grams’s rules: Rule #3: Don’t stare at invisible faeries; Rule #2: Don’t speak to invisible faeries; and most importantly Rule #1: Don’t ever attract faeries’ attention.

But now the rules have changed, and Aislinn is no longer safe from the faeries that have begun stalking her. What is it they want from her? And how far are they willing to go to get it? Can Aislinn continue to live by the same rules, ignoring their existence, when she seems to be their prime interest?

I found this debut novel from Melissa Marr an interesting entry into the YA urban fantasy genre. There were a few grammatical mistakes here and there, presumably because this was an Advance Reader’s Edition. Like the faeries in Holly Black’s novels, these are not your sweet, winged creatures, but reflect the true spirit of the Fae and the various courts.
