Mayer goes back to his acoustic roots — 2 years ago
It’s nice to hear John Mayer pick up an acoustic guitar again. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’m not in love with the electric bluesy stuff he’s been doing, it’s just that I first got into Mayer through all the live recordings he leaked onto file sharing services, way back in his “No Such Thing” days when everyone thought he was just another guy with good hair and catchy tunes.
Ben Harper guests on “Waiting on the World to Change,” which opens the six-track EP. Taking the tracks acoustic makes some interesting changes. “Good Love is On the Way” seems more lonely than it did on Try. “I’m Gonna Find Another You” doesn’t have the same bite it does on Continuum, but “Belief” seems to have more. Mayer seems resigned and regretful when he sings “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” which makes me want to play it back to back with the more bitter studio version. Together they make the perfect break-up song. “In Repair,” the longest song at almost six minutes, closes the set.
If you buy from iTunes, it comes with a 20-minute documentary about the process of writing “In Repair” at Avatar Studios in New York City over the course of about 12 hours.
