I finished this graphic novel by Lat in less than an hour. I do not know much about the Muslims living in South East Asia. Actually, I do not know much about the Muslim religion.
In this graphic novel, Lat illustrates and writes about when he was born until he left the kampung to go to boarding school. Through his pictures, he expresses the joy he had growing up, making friends, dealing with his parents, life in the kampung, and going to school to learn how to read the Koran (“Tajwid” – the art of reading Arabic with the correct enunciation). All of this and more within 141 pages.

It is a whimsical, sweet look at Lat’s childhood. Honestly, it made me want to think of a story from my childhood & illustrate it.
