Global interplay brought down to African backyards — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A wonderful film of ideas. This is what movies should strive to attain. Sissako continues to grapple with globalization this time staging an trian of the world bank and IMF in the midst of a family’s backyard. Placed against a backdrop of domesticity, these grand ideas are explored and placed in the right perspective. An acute look at Africa – there are no innocents on either side. A dialog is taking place but we never focus on the people that are affected. This is a modern Africa that is often overlooked in , gritty, a mixture of sophistication, tradition and modernity. The cinematography is great, the colours lavish, at times overwhelming as when a group of young men wander off into the desert. The film is deliciously subversive. Also especially poignant is the music that bookends the narrative. At first a celebration and then a heart-breaker: Ghanaian afrobeat courtesy of Christy Azuma & Uppers International. Sissako is in a zone.
