Mine humble musings, in short:
Not terribly exciting (in the action-packed, fast-paced a la Michael Crichton or Matthew Reilly) – well, not at first, at least.
What was most captivating (to me) ~ was how dear Isabel’s musings (esp. those leaning towards moral philo./ethics) was beautifully peppered throughout the mystery narrative…
But, am still bemused by how Alexander McCall Smith so deftly paints such an endearing – and believeable lead lady character. Personally, I’ve felt that this is not as easy as it might seem – for it takes much more perceptive and observant mind to be able to appreciate the world through different perspectives, such as the differing world-views as by people of a different gender..
And, as far as I know, very few (only two, amongst my fave writers) are able to do this well. :)
And I loved the ending ~ Short, sweet & with an Isabellian (if i may so call it thus;) ) twist!
Wishes all*
