A story about this — 1 year ago
I’m from Hawaii’s Hawai’i island (the Big Island), home of famed astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished in the 1986 Challenger explosion. He was from Kealakekua, Kona, and after his death the Ellison Onizuka Space Center was opened there, so, naturally, every few years my elementary school would take us all on a field trip there. There, I got to try all the “space foods,” and I grew especially fond of the freezedried ice cream, which I purchased in the gift shop and promptly devoured on the 2-hour drive back home. There is something so comforting and delicious about it, but in a strange, synthetic, unnatural way. Just looking at the picture of it, I was instantly flooded with childhood nostalgia. I could even taste it in my mouth, with its dry, whipped consistency. It felt so wonderful on the tongue.
