Demetri Martin’s jokes are a series of mostly one- or two-liners that are often rather funny. There’s not a real through line to most of them, so instead of him trying to think of ridiculous links he just plows through and keeps delivering joke after joke. Some of them are set to music, some of them are just delivered straight to the audience. My biggest problem is that the album is a little overambitious. At an hour and ten minutes, These Are Jokes is about ten minutes too long; all those jokes can get a little repetitive, and a couple of lame songs – “The Grapes Song” and “The Wisdom Song” – at the end are unnecessary. I almost always skip those two songs anyway, and if they were done away with the cd would be just about the right length. So it’s certainly not perfect, but there are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments to be had listening to these jokes.
