I didn't like him — 5 years ago
I picked this up because I saw Rakoff on The Daily Show, and thought he was funny. I couldn’t make it through the book, though. It’s not that it wasn’t funny – it was, in places. It was just that I couldn’t stand the narrator (I guess Rakoff). He didn’t seem like a nice person, and was way too interested in finding faults with others, or congratulating himself on his differentness. Also, the title combined with the bookjacket reviews were a real turn off. The gist is that Rakoff is supposed to be presenting himself as this aloof, elitist journalist, but he’s a fraud and is supposed to actually be a nice sympathetic caring guy, or some such. I didn’t buy it.
