Why I recommend this — 2 years ago
Filmed in 1994, long before Geena Davis became “President of the United States” on TV, this romantic comedy about speech writing on the campaign trail is a lot of fun. It pokes good fun at the political process, while using lots of irony to bring Julia (Davis) and Kevin (Michael Keaton) together in the “unspoken language of love” (woof woof!). Plenty of miscues and twists of fate make this very watchable, despite a rather slow start.
But why I recommend this is to see Christopher Reeve as Bob ‘Bagdad’ Freed. I’d almost forgotten he had a screen life between Superman and the fall from his horse. This isn’t his best part, but it’s a good one, demonstrating how well film preserves the memories and abilities of actors we have come to love.
