This book actually contains three of Conrads stories:
Youth
- an interesting story, but sometimes a bit lengthy… I liked the ending, which created the feeling that the whole journey had happened just for this one picture of the East in the narrators mind
Heart of Darkness
- advertised as a “chilling tale of horror”, this story doesn’t keep the promise. It had a tense atmosphere, brooding, always ready to explode and leave the reader surprised – but it doesn’t. To me: no horror at all, just a colonists report. I especially disliked My Indended..
The End of the Tether
- to me, this was the best of the three stories! it was exciting to find out what exactly is wrong with captain Whalley. and then, the whole development of the story and the ending were just incredibly sad & got me thinking quite a bit.. if you don’t have the time to read all three stories—> read this one!
