Jack L. Chalker was a historian, a history teacher, in fact. But he must have known quite a bit about sociology, psychology, and other subjects to weave these stories together.
His novels are incredible. He fits a lot of intricate, beautiful pieces together in a masterpiece of fiction. He never forgets the human element.
The technology in his stories serves to demonstrate what men could do, if they were so empowered by technology to be able to what they truly want. And to show what it would be like to live under those who became tyrants buoyed to power by magic or technology. After all, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
You have heard of the famous super sagas of science fiction: Foundation trilogy, Asimov’s Robot novels, Dune, and so on. But I am telling you – you don’t know truly great science fiction until you read this series.
Once you start reading them, you won’t be able to stop. But start anyway, you won’t be sorry.
These stories are action and adventure all through.
At their ends, more often than not, there is poetic justice and irony. There are not just good stories, they are the work of a master craftsman. And the Well World series is among his best.
