WORTH CONSUMING!

an interesting movie based on a Greek play by Euripedes about the Trojan women after the fall of Troy. A commentary about the sorrows suffered by the innocent women after war.

It may not be possible to make Euripides’ classic anti-war play into a movie that appeals to modern movie-goers, even with the star power of Katherine Hepburn, Genevieve Bujold, Irene Papas, and Vanessa Redgrave. There is a lot of shrieking and moaning, Greek guards just standing around doing nothing, and considerable overacting suited to the stage, but not to the screen. The music by Mikis Theodarkis is rathering interesting, kind of Greek-Indian with bouzouki and sitar. But I can’t recommend this except as a valiantly unsuccessful attempt at raising the ghosts of Troy’s widows.
