Finally finished the trilogy: “Uglies,” “Pretties,” and “Specials.” Overall, I thought it was a great series by Westerfeld. The pace is really fast, with lots of adventures on hoverboards, tricks being played and being chased by government agents. It was interesting seeing the main character, Tally, transform throughout the series as she tried to figure out who she is and what she wanted to stand for. I was a little turned off by how Westerfeld portrays the “beautiful” people but it is a commentary on how people need to strive for that ideal that is kids and adults are constantly barraged with from the media. Maybe if we all looked a like no one would fight? I think it was a pretty positive portrayal of a strong female character who still has the dramas of life, like broken friendships, lost loves, confusion about what she wants as opposed to what she needs, but I do think the end was a bit of a cop out. It seemed a bit to cut and dry with all the other drama that was going on. However, it is still worth picking up. I actually bought the first two for my niece for Christmas.
