A story about this — 6 years ago
Having listened, in absolute joy, to the ‘Try!’ album,’ I think that playing live is what JM was born to do. And I don’t think any of his other records touch it. There’s a reckless abandon in his playing that just shines, without for a moment making it sound sloppy or unconsidered. It’s so obvious that he’s enjoying himself, there’s so much energy to it. And that’s great fun to listen to.
But I think the good stuff on ‘Continuum’ is really good and the sort of thing that people will still be listening to in thirty years time, happy that they’ve discovered it all over again. I could live without ‘The Heart of Life’ track but I get why he wanted it on the album. I found his lyrics before I ever heard his music and I loved how he told stories with his songs. Musically, it’s the little touches that he’s added, that you wouldn’t necessarily pick up on in the first sitting, that make this, over all, a genuine pleasure to listen to.
