Why I want to consume this — 2 years ago

i’ve read this book about three times now. only i’ve never made it until the end. it wasn’t the content that disturbed me. it’s just that i lost the motivation to read.

recently i had heard about an event that takes place in the book. i don’t remember reading about it. so it must have been far in.

This is the most disgusting book I’ve ever read. I’ve read really graphic things, yet this is the only book that has ever made me queasy. Some of the lines where the main character just slips in a reference to some nasty violent act he did were just shocking.

I’m liking it though. It feels so horrible to say that, but it’s a good book.

I wanted so badly to like this, but I found it average at best. A little boring. I started another Ellis book, “Glamorama” and fear that it might just be Ellis’s style that I don’t dig.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I tried reading this years ago, when I lived in Seattle I think. It absolutely didn’t click. A few years later, when I lived in New York and saw the atmosphere every day, I gave it another try, and it totally made sense. Ellis isn’t writing this overblown, adjective-filled description of a completely despisable yuppie because he wants you to love him; he’s writing to show you that he’s a dick. And that type-A personality disorder is what makes him a killer.

I also read this back-to-back with Fight Club, and the similarities between the two were a total mindfuck.

Gross, but necessary — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The casual violence (like, “Went to the store, killed a puppy, got a massage…”) and the longer, graphic murder scenes definitely taking some getting used to. But I’m half-way through and I’m really liking it. I think the violence and even the sometimes-tedious descriptions are necessary for the telling of the story, and to get the message across.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I threw this book across my bedroom. Terrible. Just terrible. I felt this author over wrote in details which bored me to death.

Absolutely awful. That’s several hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Whilst finding the book really hard work, with all the intricate descriptions of peoples’ attire, and the corportate mentioning, I understand that it was completely necessary to build up this profile of the character.

A slog, and thoroughly disgusting, but if you can stomach it, worth reading.

I was surprised at how quickly I was skimming over horrific detail as if it were commonplace.
